Brain Injury Resource Facilitation

Brain Injury Resource Facilitation is a fee-free service offered by the Brain Injury Association of Iowa to help people with brain injury and their families, caregivers, and community navigate medical and general life challenges after a brain injury.

We offer support in coping with the issues of living with brain injury and transitioning back to work and the community, and we help connect individuals and families with the services and supports they may need. Support is provided in a variety of forms, including:

• Providing brain injury specific information and resources
• Enhancing natural supports and providing linkage to appropriate supports, services, and community resources
• Providing training to service providers to increase Iowa’s system capacity to provide appropriate services
• Accessing, securing and maximizing funding, both private and public
• Sharing the Iowa Brain Injury Resource Network Tote Bag, which contains important brain injury information and information on various services and supports for individuals and families experiencing brain injury.

Support Groups

Our support groups are where individuals can connect, share experiences, and find encouragement. Together, we provide understanding, resources, and community to help one another navigate challenges and celebrate successes. All support groups meet in person or virtually.

Iowa Brain Injury Resource Network

We strive to continually expand Iowa’s capacity to serve individuals and families experiencing brain injury, and to increase the number of access points where people can get consistent, reliable information and referrals to get the assistance or care they need. IBIRN member sites receive monthly communication about BIAIA services and supports, updated resources, training opportunities, and the opportunity to participate in our Brain Injury Tote Bag Program

The Warm Line is a Peer run, telephone-based, non-crisis, confidential listening line for anyone struggling with mental health or substance use issues. The line is staffed 24/7 by people who have been through a similar journey and are in recovery themselves. The Warm Line can…. • Give support for individuals not requiring crisis management. Those in crisis are transferred to the Crisis Line for critical services. • Provide an empathetic, non-judgmental listening. • Provide referrals to specialty resources and assistance in accessing services. • Empower individuals to pursue health and well-being.

Crisis Stabilization Residential Services for Children Under 18 

Residential Services are available at Easterseals Iowa’s Camp Sunnyside location for people under the age of 18 who are experiencing a mental health crisis less severe than requiring an inpatient hospitalization.  A parent or guardian must approve participation in these services which include a session with a therapist and work on an Action Plan every day for up to five days.

Safe Harbor Crisis Stabilization Center

A safe place where people who are experiencing a mental health crisis can voluntarily access crisis intervention services for three to five days. Professionals identify appropriate community resources to assist in long-term recovery.

How to Access Services

To access the Mobile Crisis Response Team, anyone within the 18-county region may call the Crisis Center at 1-855-581-8111. The service is available to all ages. Anyone experiencing a crisis can access the crisis line, whether it is adolescent behavioral issues, depression, anxiety, substance use, suicidal thoughts and everything in between. Trained phone responders will assess the situation and deploy the Mobile Crisis Response Team if an in-person response is deemed to be necessary or helpful.

A trained two-person team will leave as soon as they have been dispatched and will respond to the scene within 60 minutes. Once onsite, the on-call counselors are able to perform crisis assessments and will take the necessary time with the client to:

• Determine if suicidal or homicidal ideations are present
• Determine if de-escalation and stabilization in the field are possible
• Complete a thorough safety plan with the client if they are willing to contract for safety in that moment

If transportation is necessary to ensure client safety, on-call counselors will transport voluntary clients ages 12 and above (with the presence of a parent or guardian for children and dependent adults).

Within 24 hours of the end of the crisis interaction, a case manager will attempt to make contact with the client and is available to provide up to 30 days of case management services. Case management can coordinate appointments, provide transportation for appointments and provide reassurance to clients.

Crisis Stabilization Community-Based Services

Crisis Stabilization Community-Based Services (CSCBS) are short-term services designed to de-escalate an individual experiencing a mental health crisis and stabilize them where the individual lives, works, attends school, or socializes. CSCBS is a voluntary service for individuals in need of a safe, secure location that is less intensive and restrictive than an inpatient hospital. The goal of CSCBS is to stabilize the individual within the community.
Services provided through Crisis Stabilization Community-Based Services include, but are not limited to:

St. Gregory Recovery Center in Bayard, Iowa, is honored to support our military and first responder communities through the Tactical Recovery program.  The Tactical Recovery program is unique among addiction treatment centers in that it provides a veteran-focused tract that runs alongside our traditional programming. Our residential treatment provides a safe, structured environment for veterans and first responders who are struggling with a substance use disorder. While at St. Gregory, our clients find recovery in their mind, body, and spirit. Our Program allows guests to cultivate the confidence and strength needed to make the decision to leave behind their drug or alcohol dependency.

Upon admission, each client is assessed with diagnostic criteria set forth by the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM).  Together with this assessment and other diagnostic tools (medical examination, psychiatric evaluation, a biopsychosocial analysis, etc.), we develop an Individualized Treatment Plan that addresses the client’s specific needs.  That Individualized Treatment Plan is reviewed continually with the client – and modified over time (as appropriate), based upon the client’s growth and progress while in treatment.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy focuses on the fact that what we are thinking dramatically impacts how we feel.  While circumstances matter and stressors are real, we often exacerbate our emotional pain by thinking in unskillful ways.  Common mental mistakes include jumping to conclusions, all or nothing thinking, arguing with reality, and disporportionate self-criticism.  When we are able to divest from these ways of thinking,  we descrease our unnecessary suffering , become more able to manage life's ups and downs, and have greater capacity to experience peace and happiness.

The fact is that life happens in one place and time - Here and Now.  In order to live fully and to increase our skillfulness in the areas we value, there is no way around the need to live more fully in the present.  Using breathwork, body awareness, and other mindfulness practices, this becomes a way of life rather than a set of techniques.

Life is amazing and we are fortunate to get to live it.  However, it is also very difficult.  Navigating the demands of daily life, coming to terms with the givens of existence, and surviving more extreme stressors require skill, courage, and tenacity.  As part of self-development practice, I encourage people to become more physically and mentally fit.  Having a greater capacity to handle adversity helps us to be more relaxed in the present, less worried about the future, and more able to be a resource for others through difficult times.

Having and maintaining healthy boundaries with others is a core life skill.  It requires knowing how we feel, what we are OK with or not, and being able to communicate our wants and needs to others.  Feeling better emotionally, having healthier relationships, and being able to communicate assertively are interrelated.

QPR

Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) is a suicide-prevention training designed to educate people from all walks of life on how to recognize the warning signs of suicide. QPR training helps people get comfortable asking the question "Are you thinking about suicide?" and then helping others get appropriate help. 

QPR training can be delivered in about one hour and is designed for all “gatekeepers." A gatekeeper, according to the Surgeon General’s National Strategy for Suicide Prevention (2001), is anyone who is in a position to recognize when someone is in a crisis and may be contemplating suicide. QPR does not require participants to become crisis counselors, but will increase their understanding of resources.

Urban Dreams Outpatient Services is an addiction treatment center that specializes in creating equal opportunities for those in recovery. This means that this drug rehab center, located in Des Moines, Iowa, works with people to help them pursue their dreams by first achieving sobriety.

Although Urban Dreams Outpatient Services doesn’t have many treatment programs, it does help individuals with drug and alcohol abuse through its OP and OWI jail diversion programs. To learn more about these substance abuse addiction treatment programs and how they work to uplift underserved and underrepresented people, read below:

This rehab center’s outpatient program (OP) offers counseling sessions to those who need help overcoming substance abuse addiction. According to this addiction treatment center, they help more than 1,750 individuals with drug-related issues every year. This drug rehab center also offers an OWI jail diversion program and operates OWI school weekend diversion classes.

The Woodward Resource Center is a residential center that provides services to people with intellectual disabilities and other related disabilities from across Iowa to help prepare you to live in a community of your choice. The Woodward Resource Center offers support for behavioral health and therapies, nutrition and swallowing and supported community living to help you return to your community. Each service has its own eligibility rules.

YSS – Youth & Shelter Services – Youth Recovery House, located in Ames, Iowa, is a non-profit alcohol and drug rehab that offers treatment for a variety of substance abuse addictions, including alcoholism, co-occurring mental health disorders, and opiate addiction. They offer residential care, providing long-term support for addiction recovery. Additional levels of care offered include relapse prevention, recovery housing, and 12-step therapy.

Specialty rehab programs at YSS – Youth & Shelter Services – Youth Recovery House include gender-specific addiction treatment addressing unique challenges faced by men and age-appropriate treatment for teens addressing adolescent-specific issues.

Patients at YSS – Youth & Shelter Services – Youth Recovery House will find the residential setting creates an immersive environment promoting full engagement in recovery away from daily triggers. For recreation, patients can unwind in the rec room after a lengthy day of therapy, use the meditation room to promote mindfulness during recovery, or continue education during recovery with the day school.
