Our personal situations may be different, but we share as equals because of what we have in common: our lives have been affected by another person’s drinking. Al-Anon is a mutual support group.

We can find understanding and support when we share our common experience with each other. Some of us are here because a spouse or partner has struggled with alcoholism. For others, the problem drinker is a parent, child, or grandchild. Sometimes a brother, a sister, or some other friend or relative brings us to Al-Anon. Many of us have had more than one alcoholic family member or friend.

Brain Injury Resource Facilitation

Brain Injury Resource Facilitation is a fee-free service offered by the Brain Injury Association of Iowa to help people with brain injury and their families, caregivers, and community navigate medical and general life challenges after a brain injury.

We offer support in coping with the issues of living with brain injury and transitioning back to work and the community, and we help connect individuals and families with the services and supports they may need. Support is provided in a variety of forms, including:

Our support groups are where individuals can connect, share experiences, and find encouragement. Together, we provide understanding, resources, and community to help one another navigate challenges and celebrate successes. All support groups meet in person or virtually.

Iowa Brain Injury Resource Network

We strive to continually expand Iowa’s capacity to serve individuals and families experiencing brain injury, and to increase the number of access points where people can get consistent, reliable information and referrals to get the assistance or care they need. IBIRN member sites receive monthly communication about BIAIA services and supports, updated resources, training opportunities, and the opportunity to participate in our Brain Injury Tote Bag Program

Certified lactation counselors offer a course that focuses on breastfeeding. Address first two hours after delivery, teaching your baby to suck, tips on milk production, reducing barriers experienced when breastfeeding and returning to work, nutrition and birth control for mothers nursing, and much more.

Support group for women to encourage and support breastfeeding their babies. It is free and open to nursing mothers. Infant weight checks are done following the class and are open to anyone, or may be scheduled.

Residential Treatment

The program begins with highly structured, supervised residential treatment that consists of:

  • Support groups including AA/NA, SMART Recovery and Celebrate Recovery

Halfway House Treatment

The Middle Phase entails clients taking on more responsibility and accountability while also gaining more freedom. This is the part of the program where they become employed. In this phase we help clients with:

• We work with a multitude of local employers to help clients:
  • Find a job
  • Maintain that Job

• We administer trust accounts for all our clients that help:

• Bridges of Iowa accepts individuals directly into our halfway house treatment program. Participation in our high-intensity residential treatment is not required for admission into this level of care.

Outpatient Treatment

This last phase of our program is when clients move out of our residential facility and into their own living arrangements where they:

• • Continue their treatment in our outpatient program in the East Village which includes:
    • Weekly group therapy sessions
    • Monthly individual counseling sessions.
    • Compliance with weekly drug testing
  • Bridges of Iowa accepts individuals directly into our outpatient treatment program. Participation in our residential treatment is not required for outpatient admission.

Graduation

Upon completion or graduation from our program, our clients are:

• • Clean and sober for nearly a year or more
  • Employed and contributing financially to a portion of their treatment costs
  • Participating in a sober support network through, family, friends,12-steps, church, and other groups.

It is obvious to see how our long-term continuum of care truly prepares them for success. 

We conduct bi-monthly graduation that include brief speeches from graduates and their families and conclude with a “crossing the bridge” ceremony.

The Central Iowa Housing Trust Fund (CIHTF) is a 501(c)3 organization with the goal of advancing affordable housing in Boone, Jasper, Marion, and Warren Counties. Formed in 2019, the CIHTF accepts and funds applications from entities that improve affordable housing in the four county region.

Our residential recovery home offers women a safe place to get grounded in their faith, find Christ-centered solutions to addiction, and begin life reestablishment.

Our home provides for up to 10 women.  The program is divided into phases with each phase bringing more independence, responsibility, and preparation towards life outside the home.  In each phase, the women work through an individualized study plan using curriculum developed by Adult and Teen Challenge USA (with a 65 year history of positive outcomes and radical life transformation in their centers across the US and Canada). Women also receive practical life-skills training in areas like developing/restoring healthy relationships, parenting, communication, financial management, cooking, and cleaning. Students are required to follow “house rules” and a daily schedule including work therapy, Bible Study, Chapel time, group activities, class time and homework assignments. Completion time varies depending on the individual but ranges between 12 and 15 months.  In later phases, women get outside employment while still having the accountability of living at the home.

At Comfort Keepers, we help seniors live safely and independently in the comfort of their own homes. 

Polk County Commodity Supplemental Food provides supplemental foods and nutrition education at no cost to low-income seniors age 60 and over in Polk, Dallas, Boone, Jasper, Story and Warren counties

Individuals receive healthy nutritious foods such as:

Court Forms

Court Appointed Special Advocates are ordinary people who care about children. They volunteer their time to support and advocate for children who currently have a case in the Child Welfare System.

CASA Volunteers amplify the voices of children who are currently in the Child Welfare System. You'll learn your role through comprehensive training, and then you'll be assigned your own case. A coach and a CASA coordinator will be there to support you along the way as you advocate in court for your assigned children.

Covert Action Treatment Facility is a private drug rehab specializing in treating drug and alcohol addiction in Des Moines, Iowa. Since 2006, this addiction treatment center has followed practices outlined by Dr. Christopher Covert that focus on treating opiate addiction and dependence.

With more than 4,000 individuals receiving treatment at this center, it has become a well known rehab with one of Iowa’s highest rates of patient sobriety. As such, it’s unsurprising that it operated a medication-assisted treatment (MAT) program. To learn more about this program, read below:

The medication-assisted treatment (MAT) program offered at this addiction treatment center helps patients reach sobriety and stability quickly. What is a Disability Access Point?

A "Disability Access Points" or "DAPs" are local places that help people with disabilities, their families and their caregivers find the services and support they need, both short term and long term. They are a friendly first stop for finding helpful information and services.

There are 4 agencies designated as DAPs across 7 districts in Iowa. These agencies are part of Iowa's Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) Network.

What Services are provided by DAPs?

DAPs help people with disabilities and their families find and use the services they need by providing the following services:

Information & Assistance: DAPs give people, their families, and caregivers important information to help them make informed choices about long-term services and supports (LTSS) by:

• Figuring out what the person needs.
• Making sure the person knows about services and opportunities.
• Connecting the person with local providers for the help they need (respite or home modifications).

Options Counseling: DAPs help people understand their pathways and set goals to make informed choices of their care. The person leads the process, and they can include family members or others they trust. This usuaully lasts about 90 days.

Non-Medicaid Short-Term Services and Support (STSS): These are temporary services that help people with disabilities live in their homes and communities and provide support to their families and caregivers.

Service Coordination for Non-Medicaid LTSS: This is a process where someone helps the person get and manage their LTSS. The person works with a coordinator to create a care plan, set goals, and choose services to meet those goals.

The Children's Rights Clinic only accepts new clients by court appointment or direct referral from a partner agency.

CRIMINAL DEFENSE CLINIC
The Criminal Defense clinic only accepts clients by court appointment. If you have been charged in a criminal matter in Polk County, the Legal Clinic must be appointed by a Judge before we can take your case. 

CIVIL CLINIC
The General Civil Clinic which primarily handles family law cases in Polk County is not currently taking any new cases.  To have your case considered, Polk County residents can participate in a phone intake day which occurs twice in an academic year.  

The next intake date will be held on Monday, January 5, 2026 for the spring semester. Cases considered will be those involving divorce, custody (if you were never married), guardianship (for people 17 ½ or older), adoption, and landlord/tenant (not involving eviction).

Intake will be done on that day and by phone only. There is no waitlist.

Please call on Monday, January 5, 2026, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., if you have a family law case, guardianship case, adoption, or landlord/tenant case in Polk County.

The Empowerment Command Center is a portion of a 2-year $2.55 million commitment to CISS by Iowa Total Care and the Centene Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Centene Corporation.

This momentous project represents CISS' commitment to addressing the urgent needs of rural Iowans facing homelessness and housing instability. The Empowerment Command Center will provide essential services, including job training, veterans' resources, case management, health and wellness support, and pathways to permanent housing. By establishing this center, CISS aims to eliminate the obstacles that residents of Poweshiek County currently face when needing to travel to urban centers for these vital services.

"Our research identified Grinnell as a place in need of services and support for individuals experiencing housing challenges," said Melissa O'Neil, CISS CEO. "The opening of our newest Empowerment Command Center in Grinnell reflects our dedication to extending efficient and effective solutions to homelessness into rural communities while fostering stability and empowerment."

• Inspections are a "snapshot" of the day and time of the inspection. At the time of the inspection, violations are recorded, and often corrected on the spot, before the inspector leaves the facility. A Welcoming Center Offering Urgent Mental Health and Substance Use Care

Our goal is to provide easier access to immediate, onsite assessment and stabilization—outside of a hospital setting—for those 18+ years of age who are experiencing a mental health or substance use crisis.

Our goal is to create an effective alternative for those in need who, until now, may have had no other choice than to go to an emergency room or be sent to jail. Individuals will be able to walk into our center, be brought in by friends or family members, or be accompanied by law enforcement. You do not have to be a resident of Johnson County. Individuals over 18 years old will be provided care regardless of their ability to pay. Insurance may be billed if available; deductibles and co-pays may apply.

We are a non-profit feline rescue located in Central Iowa. Our mission is to rescue, provide a safe haven, and care for abandoned animals until a permanent home can be found.  Each one of our adoptable has a story and each one has a specific need, thus each home will be picked according to that particular pet's needs! Heart of Iowa Big Brothers Big Sisters helps to instill hope, introduce children to positive and healthy activities, empower kids to set goals, and encourage them to grow into confident, competent members of the community. Positive outcomes from this one on one mentoring include increased self -esteem, improved student academic success, increased connection to the school community, and improved positive social interactions.

PROGRAMS DIVISION - LEAD-BASED PAINT & LEAD HAZARD REDUCTION DEMONSTRATION GRANT PROGRAMS

The purpose of the Lead-Based Paint Hazard Control (LHC) and the Lead Hazard Reduction grant programs (LHRD) is to identify and control lead-based paint hazards in eligible privately owned housing for rental or owner-occupants. The Lead-Based Paint Hazard Control Grant program is the largest program in terms of dollar amount and number of grants. The main distinction between the two programs is that the LHRD program is targeted to urban jurisdictions (either alone or through a consortium) that have at least 3,500 pre-1940 occupied rental housing units, while the LBPHC program is open to all jurisdictions, urban, suburban or rural. Also, the requirement for grantee match is higher (25% vs. 10%) for the LHRD than for the LBPHC program. Both programs have a stellar track record across the country. Funding opportunities are published in the annual Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA) and are available online.

• MICA’s School Sealant Program provides routine dental screenings to third and seventh-grade students throughout school districts in Boone, Marshall, Story, and Tama counties.
• Along with a routine screening, MICA’s dental hygienist applies a sealant to any tooth in need of one at no cost to the student’s family. These sealants act as a barrier between bacteria and the enamel of the teeth.
• According to the CDC, children receiving dental sealants in school-based programs have 60% fewer decayed surfaces in back teeth for up to 2-5 years after a single application.
• The I-Smile Dental Home Initiative is a program that helps Iowa’s children connect with dental services.
• I-Smile has four objectives: Improve the dental Medicaid program, recruit and retain dentists in underserved areas, incorporate dental clinics within rural hospitals, and improve the dental support system for families.

The Giving Gardens are a collaborative effort of local organizations that aim to improve the health of Poweshiek County by providing access to fresh, local produce. During the growing season, the Giving Gardens depend on volunteers to maintain that gardens and harvest food. The harvested produce is then delivered to locations where community members can receive it, such as, MICA, UPH-GRMC Public Health, the Senior Center, Brookside Housing, and the Station Clubhouse. Area farmers and gardeners are encouraged to donate excess produce to these locations.

Centers offer whole-person wellness for seniors qualifying for nursing home care yet still living in their home. Our centers offer enriching activities and friendships along with complete medical needs from primary physician services to physical therapies, dental appointments, wellness consultations and more. Participants can remain living independently for as long as possible and Medicaid qualifying individuals receive Pathways services at no cost.

The Iowa Mission of Mercy sets up a temporary dental clinic in a rotating location in the State of Iowa. Volunteers and sponsors donate their time and resources to provide free dental care to patients who attend the clinic. Lives are transformed as licensed dental professionals provide a wide variety of treatments from cleanings to some oral surgeries and everything in between. Oral health is a critical part of a person’s overall well-being, but some face barriers when it comes to receiving proper dental care.

IMPACT Community Action Partnership reduces the barriers and burdens that families in poverty experience by increasing access to essential needs. Assistance may be available for food and personal hygiene, utilities (heat, water, and cooling), housing (rent, deposit, and mortgage), and emergency needs. All services are available in the office, over the phone, and by a scheduled home visit. Several programs can also be accessed via online application, email, or postal mail. See our website or contact our team by phone or email to learn more. May offer assistance with emergency applications, such as those related to flood or weather damage events.

• Utilities: LIHEAP (Low Income energy assistance program) help. Heat, water, and cooling. 
• Housing: Rent, deposit, and mortgage. 
• HOME ARP funds - allow eligible individuals with housing start-up costs (application fees, deposit, rent, and utility arrears).  This program is for those who have been recently released from incarceration in the last year.
• HOME CHAMP program -  a housing assistance initiative in Iowa, a collaboration between IMPACT Community Action Partnership and Wellpoint. It provides case management and direct financial assistance for housing costs to eligible Wellpoint members in Iowa. 
• Air Conditioner/Fan Program: limited supplies

Food Cards: IMPACT Resource Centers located in counties where we do not have a food pantry (Jasper, Marion, and Warren) offer limited access to food cards for local grocery stores. Please call 515-518-4770 to check on the availability of the cards.

RAYS Scholarship: for eligible low-income students to participate in sports, band, dance, etc.

InfantSEE ®: Establishing a Lifetime of Healthy Eyes and Vision

Cooing, sitting up, and crawling are all signs that a baby is growing. But, did you know that a baby's vision has stages of development too? Signs marking vision development are often less noticeable even to parents, teachers, and other health care providers. That's why the American Optometric Association recommends scheduling an infant's first eye exam around six months of age, immediately after the eye undergoes rapid and profound changes and is therefore most vulnerable to interference with healthy development.

InfantSEE, a public health program, managed by Optometry Cares - The AOA Foundation, is designed to ensure that eye and vision care becomes an integral part of infant wellness care to improve a child's quality of life. Under this program, AOA member optometrists provide a no-cost comprehensive eye and vision assessment for infants 6-12 months old regardless of a family's income or access to insurance coverage.

While many parents may think that a vision screening is enough, a study funded by the National Eye Institute found that even the most sophisticated vision screening tools, administered by the most highly-trained vision screeners, will miss one-third of children with an eye or vision disorder.[i> InfantSEE provides early intervention using necessary specialized equipment and procedures - which are not available as part of most vision screenings. During an InfantSEE assessment a doctor of optometry will test for excessive of unequal amounts of nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, eye movement ability, eye health problems, and discuss patient and family history. Comprehensive eye and vision care is important to detect problems early to ensure babies have the opportunity to develop the visual abilities they need to grow and learn.
